Kalou showed he still had plenty to offer the Blues by scoring the goal at Benfica that put them on the brink of a sixth Champions League semi-final in nine years.
The 26-year-old's Chelsea career looked over under sacked boss Villas-Boas and he claimed after the 1-0 quarter-final first-leg win his lack of action was a punishment for refusing to extend his contract, which expires this summer.
Asked if he had been worried he would go the way of his former team-mates, Kalou said: "Yeah. They (Anelka and Alex) did well for the club and did a great job.
"Every player has his own issue with the club. I can't relate my issue to them.
I have been told because I didn't sign the contract, I was not allowed to play."
